What is CAYAC?
The Child and Youth Advisory Council (CAYAC) plays a key role in bringing a youth perspective to the planning and delivery of child and youth-related programs on behalf of partners involved with the Network.
CAYAC members are between 12 and 19 years. They help adults to develop and maintain child and youth friendly and family centred environments within our programs and services. Youth advise administrators, staff and planners on issues ranging from services and care to physical surroundings. The Council comments on current programs as well as those in the planning stages, and provides suggestions and new ideas to improve the quality of services to children and youth. Members attend five regular meetings per year (held on Saturdays) with additional consultations that may be time-sensitive, brought to the attention of Council members outside of these regular meetings.
The Council provides adults with:
| • | ideas from youth about ways to improve the experience of care for children and youth |
| • | advice on the best ways to involve youth in Network activities on an ongoing basis |
| • | youth perspectives on projects and strategic planning, new programs or evaluation of existing services |
| • | assistance in determining what artistic, recreational, and other activities might enhance service delivery, facilities, and sites of the organizations |
| • | another way to include family centred care principles into regular business practices |
The Council provides youth with:
| • | a fun, respectful atmosphere to work with youth from all over southern Alberta |
| • | ways to make new friends while working on meaningful issues |
| • | chances to show adults and other young people what positive and important contributions youth can make |
| • | ways to give input on those services and programs that are being created for children and youth |
| • | help and practice in learning how to think through challenging issues |
| • | experience using video-technology |
| • | opportunities to learn how to share thoughts clearly and to put ideas into writing |
| • | chances to become positive role models for other children and youth |
