The Rotary/Flames House is a community-based hospice that will serve families from southern Alberta who are caring for a child with a progressive or life-threatening illness. The house is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009.
The House is located northeast of the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary and is modeled after a two-storey home. It will be a place of sanctuary for families and their children. Care will be provided by a team of healthcare professionals trained to provide care and support in a warm, friendly, home-like environment. As well as end of life care, Rotary/Flames House will provide planned and urgent respite and short term transitional care. Services will include:
- Respite Care - 24 hour care of children on a temporary basis, to allow their families time for rest and renewal
- Transition Care - when the child no longer requires an acute care setting, but whose family requires time to learn care routines or arrange community services, i.e. wheelchair access, nursing, or physical therapy
- Symptom Management - care aimed at managing the adverse physical and emotional symptoms of the child's illness and/or side effects of treatment
- End of Life Care - comprehensive services for both child and family during the last hours or days of a child's life.
The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation raises funds for excellence in child health and family centred care and is the official fundraising body for Rotary/Flames House. The Rotary Clubs of Calgary and the Flames Foundation for Life donated $2.5 million towards construction of the hospice, which is set for completion in the spring of 2009. Once open, the Hospice will be operated by the Alberta Health Services – Calgary and Area.
